Office building constructed out of shipping containers
A brand new, innovative three storey office building has been created out of used shipping containers Sunderland.
The project, which came to a total cost of £1.2m, was carried out for Sustainable Enterprise Strategies [SES], which supports social enterprises.
For the creation of the complex, there were thirty seven used shipping containers that were adapted and reconditioned ready for use – they will now house SES staff members, as well as being used as start-up accommodation for new businesses.
Each container that has been recycled will have been in use for about 20 years, traveling upwards of around one million miles transporting goods across oceans over the years.
The Director of SES, Mark Heskett Saddington, said: “We chose his unusual method of construction because it’s sustainable and appropriate. SES is committed to the principle of reduce, re-use and recycle and of course Sunderland has a long association with shipping. It’s also a relatively quick and low cost construction method.”

Alleged smugglers caught in shipping container drugs bust
A pair of alleged smugglers have been charged with trying to transport £250 million worth of heroin via a shipping container.
In total, 168kg of the substance was seized, which is the fifth biggest haul in Australian history.
Heroin – dubbed “the devil’s drug” – has ensnared the likes of 20th century author William Burroughs and rock star Kurt Cobain, along with countless other less glamorous users.
Let’s hope the authorities’ ability to crack down on smuggling gives businesses greater confidence in the shipping transportation industry.
